Preparing for labour & birth is an exciting and momentous occasion. As you approach your due date, one of the most important tasks is packing your birth bag.

This bag will accompany you to the hospital or birthing center, ensuring you have everything you need to support you through labour and birth. In this blog post, we'll explore essential items to include in your birth bag, from practical necessities to comforting extras that can make all the difference.

  1. Snacks: Labour can be a long and physically demanding process, and having nourishing snacks on hand can help keep your energy levels up. Opt for easy-to-digest snacks such as granola bars, fruit, crackers, and nuts. High-protein snacks like peanut butter sandwiches or cheese sticks can also provide sustained energy. It's essential to pack snacks that you enjoy and that won't upset your stomach during labour.(Make sure your birth partner also packs snacks for themselves!)

  2. Pain Relief Tools: Labour can feel intense, but there are several tools you can pack to help manage discomfort. A comb can be surprisingly effective for relieving pain when pressed firmly against your palm and used to apply counter-pressure during contractions. Additionally, a tennis ball can be used for massage, rolling it against your lower back or wherever you're experiencing tension. Heat packs or cold packs can also provide relief, so consider including them in your bag.

  3. Hydration: Staying hydrated during labor is crucial for both you and your baby. Pack a refillable water bottle and consider bringing drinks with added electrolytes to help replenish your fluids. A bendy straw can be incredibly useful, allowing you to sip water without having to adjust your position too much.

  4. Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy can be a powerful tool for relaxation and pain management during labour. Pack some essential oils that you find calming, such as lavender or peppermint, along with a small diffuser or cotton pads to inhale the scent. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to a tissue or washcloth and place it near your head or on your pillow for aromatherapy benefits. If you have used aromatherapy during your pregnancy to aid relaxation this can be a great anchor to relax during labour.

  5. Birth Preferences: Your birth preferences outline your wishes for labour and birth, including things like who you want in the room with you, your pain management preferences, and any special considerations you have for the birth of your baby. Make sure to pack multiple copies of your birth preferences and discuss them with your birth team ahead of time. While it's essential to remain flexible during labor, having a plan in place can help you feel more empowered and in control.

Packing your birth bag is an important part of preparing for labour and birth.

(TOP TIP get your birth partner to physically pack the bag so they know where everything is when you need it!)

By including essential items like snacks, pain relief tools, hydration options, aromatherapy supplies, and your birth preferences, you can create a comfortable and supportive environment for yourself during this special time. Remember to tailor your birth bag to your individual needs and preferences, and don't hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns. With birth preparation and a well-packed birth bag, you'll be ready to welcome your new arrival into the world with confidence and comfort.
